The Gravina della Madonna della Scala and the Sanctuary. Archaeological and naturalistic trekking

The ravine of the Madonna della Scala, man-made since the Neolithic, contains within it a naturalistic environment rich in caves, aromas and mystery, where the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala and over 200 residential areas of the original medieval rock village stand, among the first rock complexes to be scientifically studied. Due to the rich spontaneous vegetation, typical of the Mediterranean landscape, which covers the entire bed of the ancient river, the ravine is called "Valley of the Roses". There are, in fact, hundreds of varieties of plants, some very rare and with medicinal properties. The eighteenth-century sanctuary, with essential Baroque lines, is accessible via a majestic staircase of 125 steps. It was built above an older chapel, but its genesis can be traced back to the presence of the Good New rock church. The excursion to the ravine is completed by a visit to the natural ravine known as the Cyclops cave and to the mysterious cave of the magician Greguro.
